I received a FREE copy of this product through the HOMESCHOOL REVIEW CREW in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way.
When we first started it with the girls, I think they were 1st and 2nd grades, so this is the first time I’ve been using it with a younger student.
At login, you simply click on your child’s name and then the program starts right up. Above you can see that my son is already 57% through Reading/Writing Level 1. He had been using it almost daily until this past week, when we stopped school for the year. I do plan to keep him going after we take this week off for a break.
Reading Kingdom is an online reading program designed for children ages 4-10 years old and helps them get to a 3rd grade level in both their writing and reading. When you start the program, you have the option to take a placement test or just start at the beginning. We went with starting at the beginning so he didn’t get frustrated seeing harder words. This was the right choice for us.
In my opinion, he’s done very well with the program. One thing that I love about Reading Kingdom is it helps the children learn keyboard recognition so in addition to reading and writing, they are learning about the keyboard. He is already being required to press shift to capitalize letters or to use the question mark key. Simon’s been picking up very quickly on this. For the most part, he is able to complete his work on his own without help. I did receive an email from Reading Kingdom once during the review period asking me to sit with him and go over some concepts. I appreciated them letting me know he was struggling in a certain area so that we could work on it together.
I feel that Reading Kingdom is an excellent program for site-word practice and learning to read skills. Another great feature is that the program has the ability to adapt to each student. It includes regular Progress Checks to determine whether a student has mastered each level and then if they need to move along or review more.
It also helps the students choose between two similar words such a bug/bugs or bug/bag. There are lots of colors and fun sounds to help keep everyone motivated and looking for that sound reward.
We will definitely continue Reading Kingdom until he has completed all the levels and I look forward to watching him continue to grow and learn with this program.
