Throughout our homeschooling years, all of my children have used various online programs. One that has always been used in their younger years is Reading Eggs from Blake eLearning Inc.
For review purposes, we have been using Reading Eggs with my 5th grader, 4th grader, and Kindergartener. This program is geared toward children ages 2-13. Even though the title implies reading skills, Reading Eggs is far more than just simply learning letters and sounds.
The program offers MathSeeds, Reading Eggs, Reading Eggs Junior, Reading Eggspress, and Fast Phonics. All of these programs are available both on a computer and as an app. I’m always a fan of programs with an app feature!
My Kindergartener has been working on Reading Eggs and MathSeeds during the review period. We use it as a reward a few times a week for when he completes his book work for the day. He’s then given time to work on his Reading Eggs program. My son’s favorite part of the program is actually MathSeeds, where he is learning numbers, number words, and shapes. He also likes working on ReadingEggs to practice site words. After completing lessons, he is given a quiz to go over what he has learned so far. There were a few times that I would have to help him on the quiz because he was in a rush to move along and missed a few things. Once I reminded him to slow down, he was able to move along again. Above, you can see him putting together sentences based on what the app is telling him.
My 5th grader prefers working on Reading Eggspress, where she reads stories and answers questions afterward. She also states that she likes having the avatar so that she can change their outfits often. Through different activities, the kids earn golden eggs that they can redeem toward virtual prizes. On their dashboard, they can spend those by simply clicking on Plaza and then shopping.
For my Fourth grader, she’s also a fan of Math Seeds. Out of my kids, she’s probably the one that likes reading the least, but she enjoys this program. She says that Reading Eggs helps make reading fun for her. It’s not just reading, though. For example, with the screen shot above, she was learning about the “point of view” in writing. It did an excellent job teaching about who is telling a particular story.
Beyond just an online program, members also have access to a Homeschool Program Guide to help shape and schedule learning for Kindergarten-2nd grade students. There are a bunch of printables available to members as well.
Overall, we are fans. Reading Eggs definitely is one of our go-to programs for the kids and we are excited to continue working through their programs with our younger kids.
Interested in trying it out? Reading Eggs is currently offering a FREE 30 Day Trial so you can see if it is a fit for your family. It’s one that I plan to continue with my younger kids until they master all of the concepts.
