I do not currently have a 5 year old, but this looks like an excellent program! Be sure to read all the details:
The Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Department offers “Kinderswim” a free summer “learn to swim” program for five year olds who live in Athens-Clarke County.
In 2015, the American Red Cross estimated that 61% of children did not know how to swim. In an attempt to make summer safer and reduce the number of non-swimmers, the Leisure Services Department offers this program providing free swim lessons that has the potential to reach hundreds of children.
There are three sessions available and classes are held on June 4 – 21, June 25-July 12, or July 16 – August 2. Time slots include 9:00 – 9:45 a.m., 11:30 a.m., – 12:15 p.m., or 5:30 – 6:15 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Space is limited to 20-30 participants per session and online registration is required. These programs takes place at all five of the department’s pools including Bishop Park, East Athens Community Center, Lay Park, Memorial Park, and Rocksprings Park. The “Kinderswim” program is free of charge to all participants. Those children completing the “Kinderswim” program will receive an ACC Leisure Services Department Pool Pass that provides free admission to all department pools and splash pads for the 2019 aquatics season.
Online registration for this program begins Saturday, March 23 at 9:00 a.m. for ACC residents. All registration takes place at www.accgov.com/leisure
The Department continues to offer its popular “Swim School” program this summer for all other youth age groups at a cost of $33 for ACC residents and $50 for non-residents. Swim School is a scholarship eligible program.
