My son has been struggling with getting the letters b and d confused while he’s learning to read and write.  I googled and didn’t come up with any worksheets that he wouldn’t have completed in less than a minute.  I wanted some smaller print where he’d actually have to decipher it as he would in a book.  The giant letters just weren’t cutting it.

I put together this worksheet for him to work on this morning and it has definitely helped him to slow down and think about which is which.  I decided to offer it up for free for my readers!

To get it, simply click for the word document: b Or d Differential Worksheet

It’s time to start buckling down and working hard.  This year I have a 5th Grader, 1st Grader, Pre-K, and a wild 2 year old.  Honestly I wasn’t planning to start until September but the kids were getting tired of the heat and mosquitoes so we went ahead and started.  I’d rather take more breaks through the school year anyways!

What grades are your kids in this year?  Have you started school yet?

After I got the little girls in bed tonight, it was time to spend time with the bigger kids.  What better way than with GeoBingo.  Great way to have fun AND learn.  That’s how we roll with our homeschooling.  🙂

How do you make learning fun in your house?

I saw this on Pinterest and I was eager to give it a try.  My older 2 definitely need some practice listening to each other, so we dove in!  It also helps in coming up with descriptive words.  Check out how to practice listening with LEGOs!

For starters, get 2 ziplock bags and put identical blocks in each bag.  We started with 20 blocks in each bag.  I grabbed my 9 year old and 6 year old, took a big box as a divider and had them describe to each other what they were building.

Now the result?  Sounds like they need to practice listening a little more 😉  But they had fun and it was a nice quiet activity while the little girls were sleeping 🙂

Back at Christmas, my son received this awesome Discovery Exclusive Fire and Ice Volcano.  We gave it a try tonight and had a blast.  We didn’t have red food coloring so we went with blue.

He’s been playing with it for a long time now and having a blast making it “explode” again and again.  Oh what fun vinegar and baking soda can bring 🙂

Wrapping Up Our Study On Strangers – Next Up, Space!

I told ya’ll a couple weeks ago that we were studying strangers in our homeschool lessons.  It’s been a great study for our family.  My older 2 have asked a ton of great questions and it’s been great learning together on what to do IF something were to happen.

I think the most influential thing I used in this study was THIS VIDEO from YouTube where someone attempted to kidnap a child here in Georgia.  It was all caught on tape.  My children watched with wide eyes and we talked about how the girl kicked, screamed, and once she was free, she ran for help.  This video makes my heart stop whenever I see it.  Yes it’s completely debatable on how the girl was left in the toy section by herself, but really ANYTHING could happen in a second.

The second most influential item I used was The Safe Side: Stranger Safety dvd.  It’s put out by John Walsh (America’s Most Wanted) so I knew it would be great.  It had a great impact on the kids.  What’s neat is that it categorizes people into Safe Side, Don’t Knows, and Kinda Knows.  Most libraries should have this available to borrow – I know ours did!  You can find worksheets and questions to go along with the movie HERE.

On the topic that’s always hard to discuss, we decided to use the book I Said No! A kid-to-kid guide to keeping your private parts private.  It was really good.  It showed what red flag signs were and to say NO!

And of course the The Berenstain Bears Learn About Strangers was excellent.  I love the comparison of a good apple with worms inside and an ugly apple that is great inside.

So we’ve finished up this study.  Next up, Space!  My son is looking forward to this topic.  If you have any book recommendations or project ideas, I’d love to hear them!
