We chose to work through “Why Do Animals Hibernate?” with our daughter. I felt that for the most part, my daughter could read through the material independently. There were a few words that required some assistance, but most of it is age appropriate. I like that each page has a small reading section followed by a thought provoking question and then a coloring page and traceable word. It’s simple enough that different sections can be completed in just a few minutes. This particular book has a total of 25 pages.
Both my daughter and I learned new things while working through the book together. It’s interesting to hear about animals that eat a lot before hibernating and ones that bring food into their home to nibble on throughout the winter. We also were able to talk about how dangerous it is for animals to be disturbed during their hibernation bouts. It’s possible that some animals could starve to death if woken too early or disturbed.
Also included in each of the books are review activity sheets. Answer keys are also available to be utilized if needed. The reviews aren’t intense, but are pretty basic and perfect for the age level intended.
I have been very pleased with the simplicity of Learning About Science Level 2 and felt it was quite perfect for our family. Having the short books helps to keep my daughter from getting overwhelmed and it gave us a goal to complete a book. Since this is available as a PDF download, we will be able to use it with younger students and reprint pages as needed.
Next, we plan to work through Scientists and the Scientific Method. In Scientists and the Scientific Method, we look forward to learning about Galileo, Isaac Newton, Benjamin Franklin, Benjamin Banneker, Caroline Herschel, Mary Somerville, Thomas Alva Edison, George Washington Carver, Albert Einstein, Alexander Fleming, Willem Kolff, Patricia Bath, Sally Ride, and Mae Jemison.
After that, I think we will go through The Cycle of Water and Types of Clouds since we are having so much rain here in Georgia lately. It’s always neat to see why rain happens and learn about the differences between tratus, stratocumulus, altostratus, altocumulus, cirrus, cumulus, and cumulonimbus clouds.
