Easy Gluten Free Sausage Balls THM S

Today we went and visited friends who have a child with a gluten intolerance.  I wanted to make gluten free sausage balls to take with us on our visit.  These sausage balls also work well if you are following the Trim Healthy Mama plan.  These would be an S.

I took a recipe that we usually use and then adjusted it.  Here’s what we did and they turned out fantastic!

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups almond flour
  • 3 tsp baking powder
  • I/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter
  • 1 egg
  • 8 oz grated sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 lb sausage

It’s easiest to get in with your hands and mix all ingredients together that way.  If you don’t want to use your hands, consider an electric mixer.  Once well combined, roll into balls and place on a parchment lined baking sheet. Bake 20-25 minutes at 375 degrees.

Remove and let cool on a plate lined with paper towels to soak up any grease.  Store in the fridge if not eating immediately.

If gluten is an issue for you, you’ll want to double check all of your ingredients to make sure they are definitely gluten free.

Do you pre-cook the sausage before adding it the mix?

No – it bakes while the sausage balls bake 🙂

If you don’t have almond flour can I replace it with coconut flour? I realized I’m out!

Coconut flour is particularly absorbent and sucks up a lot of moisture. Replacing coconut flour for almond flour (or grain flours) may require some liquid. Give it a shot and let me know how it works!

Looks great! How many balls should you expect to have with this recipe? I’m wondering if I need to double it or not. Thanks!

Mine turned out great! I always pre-cook sausage before adding to mix. I also used hot sausage and added a little crushed red pepper. I also added about a 1/4 cup of coconut flour to stretch the recipe, but added extra butter to compensate the moisture absorbing factor made 26 delicious snacks!

How many does this make and what would be a serving if following the Trim Healthy Mama plan?

Do you have the calorie, fat, protein and carb counts for these? I didn’t see it where I saw the recipe posted.

Mine made about 24 1-1 1/2 inch balls. I also used THM baking blend and added 3 tablespoons of butter to make it more moist.

I am new to THM, and am eager to try your Sausage Balls. I never saw where you responded to one commenter about the serving size. How many do you eat if it is a breakfast meal? Do you have anything with it? Thanks!

As with all S meal THM, you should eat until you’re content, however I would recommend serving these with scrambled eggs perhaps and maybe some sautéed zucchini. YUM!
