The last time we reviewed for YWAM Publishing, we checked out Corrie ten Boom.  I’m just loving their Christian Heroes: Then & Now series.  This time, we received Christian Heroes: Then & Now –  Amy Carmichael!  I was very excited for my older children and I to learn more about this well-known missionary.

About the Book:

Geared toward ages 10 and up, Christian Heroes: Then & Now –  Amy Carmichael follows the life of missionary Amy Carmichael throughout her service in India.  Truly inspiring, you can see how God’s hand was definitely involved throughout her journeys and challenges.  The Christian Heroes: Then & Now series features the exciting biographies of Christian missionary characters from all over the world.  This particular book sells for $7.50 on their website.

About the Study Guide:

The Heroes of History series will offer you guides to: Small Groups (Sunday School or Scout type groups), Classroom (larger classroom settings), and Homeschool (designed for the homeschool environment).  We went with the Homeschool version for purposes of this review.

The Christian Heroes: Then & Now – Amy Carmichael study guide was very useful to help us dig deep into the life of Amy Carmichael and was a wonderful side to the book.  The beginning of the study guide features Bible verses that will be helpful to memorize to go along with this study.  Chapter questions are included to make sure the reader is retaining the information in the book.  In addition to the chapter question, you can also find essay questions and even hands-on projects, audio/visual projects, and arts and crafts for children that enjoy those.

With our older kids, we went through the vocabulary words, Bible verses, and the chapter questions while we read through the book.  I think I learned as much, if not more, than the kids did!

Our Thoughts:

As I mentioned earlier, we are big fans of these books.  I read Christian Heroes: Then & Now –  Amy Carmichael with my 11 and 14 year old and both were amazed by the things Amy Carmichael did, but also how well it was written.  The book captivates you from the start.  As soon as the book arrived, my oldest disappeared with it.  She is eagerly looking forward to reading more books in this series.  I had my oldest write a little and tell you how she liked it.

Here’s what my 14 year old daughter had to say:

The book Christian Heros: Then & Now has a book about Amy Carmichael called Rescuer of Precious Gems.  It is a very inspiring book about Amy Carmichael also known as Amma.  As a missionary, she travels the world to spread the news of Christ to everyone she can.  She listens to God’s call and becomes different from other missionaries.  Amy decides to change her regular clothes to clothes that the natives wear.  It is easier for her to preach the gospel.  Amy opens a house for orphaned kids and kids dedicated to the gods.  She teaches the kids about having faith in Christ.
I like this book a lot because it is a true story and inspires me to want to tell people about Christ.  It also helps to realize that we don’t have to fit in, but we need to be okay with being different for Jesus.  I think this is a good book for all ages because it is an amazing and inspiring story without martyrdom.  Amy Carmichael is a good leader to look up to.
