Washington Farms in Watkinsville, GA is one of our favorite places to visit each fall. They are packed full of outdoor fall farm activities and a pumpkin patch. They also offer deals for teachers and first responders.

This year, Teacher Appreciation and Hometown Hero Weekends are September 19-20th, and 25th-27th. Teachers will receive free admission with school id, paystub, or homeschool certificate.

US Military, Fire, Law Enforcement, and EMS Personnel receive free admission and 50% off for immediate family members with service ID.

That means as a law enforcement family and homeschooling family, both my husband and I get in free and then half off for the kids.

For more information, please check out the Washington Farms website.

You can actually get your tickets on their website to save time and avoid lines! Simply select the date you want to visit and then select “Teachers”, “Heroes”, or “Heroes Family” ticket options and check out. Remember to bring your ID and info with you to show at the booth!

Picture taken in our neighborhood, a beautiful reminder of God’s goodness.

Today is day 10 of staying at home and so far, we are doing well.  I truly enjoy cooking for my family and spending time with them, so honestly it hasn’t been too difficult.  Saturday we celebrated a week at home by making a cookie cake and grilling outside.  The kids enjoyed it and it was a delicious treat.  This week brings another week at home and homeschooling.  Today my husband has to return to his work in law enforcement.  We spoke to his oncologist and to our PCP and even though his immunity is a little low, they say to just use good hygiene and stay away from others to prevent contracting the virus.  Please pray that he continues to stay healthy.  I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous, but we need to trust his doctors and above all else, trust that God has this.

It is a little bizarre not having anywhere to go and not being able to play with our neighbors.  We pray that this season passes quickly and that all of you stay healthy.

Here’s our menu for the week –

Monday: Lasagna

Tuesday: Burritos

Wednesday: Egg Casserole

Thursday: Roast, veggies

Friday: Grilled Cheese, soup

Saturday: Lentil Soup

Sunday: Spaghetti

Cirque Italia is in Athens!

Great news that Cirque Italia is HERE in Athens!  We were given tickets to last night’s show and it was quite a treat!  Everyone had a great time and my 3 year old sat through the entire show!  During the show, they selected 2 people from the audience to come on stage and my husband was picked.  He was to “fight” the clown and it was quite entertaining.  He had fun on stage and said the clown told him exactly what to do.  His “fight name” was Stranger Danger.  Quite hilarious since he’s in law enforcement!

Our favorite act beside the one that my husband was brought into was the wheel of death!  Wow!  It had us all holding our breath and on the edge of our seat!  My girls also really loved the mermaid that swung from the net.  She was incredible!  It was a great show and I hope they bring more shows to our area in the future.  I don’t have any pictures of it since photography isn’t allowed during the show, so you will have to see it for yourself!

I really appreciated that it was a “kid friendly” show.  The show even had some small children in it!

One thing to note about the show is to bring CASH for any goodies that your children might want.  They offer popcorn, funnel cakes, drinks, and some light up items.  There is also a $5 cash fee to park.

The Water Circus: Gold Unit will be featured at the Athens Fairgrounds in Winterville, Georgia.  There are eight shows to choose from between April 11th-14th with various times.  This is a show you won’t want to miss!

Kids Go Free Deal:

To make things more affordable for families to attend, Cirque Italia is offering a free child’s ticket!  You can receive 1 free child ticket (ages 2-12) with every full price adult ticket purchased in level 2 or level 3. At checkout, simply use code FREE.

Children under age 2 are admitted free provided they sit in a parent’s lap.

For More Information and Tickets:

Bulletproof Marriage – A 90 Day Devotional

My husband and I love doing devotions together.  Around Christmas, I heard about a new one called Bulletproof Marriage – A 90-Day Devotional.  When we finished our last devotional, we bought this one and I’m so glad we did!

Bulletproof Marriage is a 90-day devotional that applies biblical principles to support and strengthen the marriages of military members, law enforcement officers, and first responders. Each day includes a Bible verse, an inspirational reading, quick tips, action steps for both husband and wife, and a prayer.

The authors are both military or law enforcement, so they get the specific needs that a first responder family entails.

We’ve just started it but, but so far we are very pleased.  The book is a nice quality, has a bookmark to mark our spot, and has given us relevant things to discuss.  I’m planning to give some as gifts – that’s how much I am liking it!  If you know a first responder or military member, grab this!

Cash Crunch Careers

I always find it fun to figure out what careers are good for myself and for my kids.  I was eagerly looking forward to this review doing the CashCrunch Careers survey with my family from CashCrunch Games.

For this review, we had 4 of our family working through the CashCrunch Careers survey.

  1. I have been a stay at home mom for 15 years so I thought it would be fun to see what jobs would be a good fit for me if I ever went back to work.
  2. My husband wanted to give it a try.  He works in law enforcement, and although he’s not looking for a career change at the moment, he wanted to see where his strengths were and suggested careers for him.
  3. My 15 year old daughter doesn’t quite know what she wants to do with her life so we wanted to see if CashCrunch Careers gave her an idea from her personality.
  4. My almost 12 year old son right now wants to be a missionary, so we thought we’d see if his career aligned with his current dreams.

When we received our codes to try the program, we had to set up an account and then click through the 75 question survey.  Each person needed to have an email address and create their own login to use the program.  The survey was fairly simple with questions and didn’t take more than 10-15 minutes to complete.  At the end, it revealed my motivators and de-motivators, career attributes, and suitable careers.

Below, you can see what it has listed as my motivators and de-motivators.  I’d have to agree for the most part on these results.

For my careers, it listed the top 20 career categories that were recommended from my survey.  I found these results extremely interesting but a little out of my comfort zone.  I definitely wouldn’t picture myself as a manager, however I think I could totally pull off being a farmer and rancher!  Funeral director made me chuckle, as well.  From here, I could click on the career categories to read the general overview and view more detailed jobs under that category.

My husband also received similar suggested career categories, however had completely different career attributes that I had listed.  Even though his suggested careers didn’t quite line up for him, I completely agree with his career attributes.  Self control, adaptability, attention to detail, integrity, and independence are all qualities that he possesses and are much needed in his current career.

My 15 year old received very similar career suggestions as well, but in a different order than her father and I.  It’s really intriguing how the career suggestions are similar, yet the motivators, de-motivators, and career attributes were all different.  I agree that her motivators and de-motivators are definitely inline with her personality.

My almost 12 year old son also received the same set of career suggestions but everything else was different.  I found it fascinating that it picked up on his innovation abilities and on concern for others.  That’s definitely my son’s personality!

Overall, I think the program was interesting but the career list wasn’t quite what I expected.  I was hoping for more questions pertaining to likes and dislikes to narrow the field down.  It was neat to see the various personalities for each individual according to our strengths and weaknesses and click through the potential career ideas.

Review: Forensic Faith For Kids

Forensic Faith for Kids
We love mysteries around here.  For the past several weeks we have been learning how to be detectives with Case Makers Academy’s Forensic Faith for Kids provided by David C Cook.

Written by Detective J. Warner Wallace, Wallace helps kids develop good investigative skills from his experiences so they can navigate tough questions about faith and share what they’ve learned with others.  Forensic Faith for Kids retails for under $10, making this an excellent choice for gifting.

With my husband working in law enforcement, he was pretty excited about the Forensic Faith for Kids book and took over reading it to the kids.  While he would read each night, my kids listened eagerly as they tried to solve the mystery.  I think he enjoyed it as much as they did, if not more!

Throughout Forensic Faith for Kids, the children try to solve 2 different mysteries.  They are simultaneously trying to find the owner of a puppy that has shown up at a fundraiser, while they also are working to prove that Jesus is God.  The author encourages note taking to help children solve the mystery.  You can see those notes above that were jotted down during our read aloud time by one of my children.  The book guides children how to look for evidence and think logically in order to find the solution.

One of my favorite quotes in the book is “Forensic Faith means that you may have a few unanswered questions and that’s okay”.  That is very helpful for the kids to understand as they learn more about Christianity.  Once you have a question, you can be on a mission to find out the answer and start gathering evidence!

At the end of the book, the kids were cheering with “I knew it” responses and were pleased with how it turned out.  I really love how both mysteries were able to parallel throughout the book and point readers into learning more about Christ and teaching them how to prove what they believe.

To further enhance the book, you can visit the Case Makers Academy website online.  There you will find a video and activities to go along with each chapter in the book.  You can download training sheets, notebook sheets, and it even provides an adult leader guide to help you guide the children through each chapter.  The videos aren’t too long but definitely help bring out the concepts in the book.  My kids eagerly looked forward to watching the video and getting the printables after we would read that night’s chapter.  These interactive features of the book really helped our family to dive in deep and have some great conversations about our beliefs.

We were very pleased with this book and intend to purchase more soon!  The kids are already asking to solve another mystery with the Case Makers Academy.  I could see this being very useful in a children’s Sunday School class or for working together as a family.
