World of Wonder Park Demolition

I know you all have been super excited about the NEW WOW park, and that has been making us wonder what will happen to the old one.  Just got the following press release to let you guys know:

The Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Department announces that with the new World of Wonder Park fully online, park maintenance crews are preparing to close the former World of Wonder Playground for demolition.

Originally constructed in 2004, the original WOW Playground provided thousands of children endless hours of adventure.  Rapid deterioration of the original playground, however, led Athens-Clarke County to begin a replacement project in 2015.  This SPLOST-funded replacement project culminated in the opening of the new WOW Park at Southeast Clarke Park this past December.

With the new play area open, the original WOW Playground is scheduled to close the week of February 13 as crews fence off the area in preparation to remove the old structure.  Current plans call for the handprint wall, brick plaza, time capsule, and dedication monument for the original playground to remain in place as a reminder of the amazing community effort–both financially and in terms of volunteer labor–that created the original playground.

Several donors have inquired as to the disposition of the named fence pickets built into the perimeter fence for the playground.  While the fence itself will not be kept, named pickets will be retained and available for pickup March 15-December 31, 2017.  Donors interested in claiming their picket should email ParkMaintenance@athensclarkecounty.com or call 706-613-3801for details.

The demolition project and associated restoration of the area is expected to take several months to complete.  As always we ask that all patrons use caution when near any construction area and follow all posted signage, fencing, and barricades throughout our parks.

Athens: The New World of Wonder Playground

As many of my local Athens, Georgia friends know, the new World of Wonder Playground, also know as the WOW Park, has reopened recently with an awesome new playscape.  We ventured out there today to celebrate our first day of the new semester in homeschooling.

Anyone that ever went to the old WOW park knew that you weren’t able to go in the summer during the day.  It was far too hot.  The new playground has plenty of shade with giant canopies over many playscapes and more importantly, over some of the benches for the parents.

Another big complaint was the forever hike to the bathrooms from the old playground.  The new playground is located right next to the bathrooms now, making it much easier to take a potty training toddler to go before an accident happens.  They also have water fountains inside the park fence but they weren’t working while we were there.

I can’t quite tell you about the benches, though, because I had a blast playing on the playground with my children!  They have a ginormous tube slide, a fun roller slide, and really all sorts of slides everywhere!

world-of-wonder-playground-generational-swing

The best part for me was the awesome Generation Swings that are located at the front of the park.  I could swing with my youngest!  He thought this was the best thing ever!

My 16 month old enjoyed the playscape designed for the 2-5 year old crowd.  On this one, there aren’t any stairs, so he was able to just walk right up the incline to get to his favorite slides.

My little monkeys enjoyed the many different types of monkey bars that were available.  Several look like things out of the American Ninja Warriors show.  My 10 year old son LOVED this part since he has great upper body strength and often needs a challenge.

athens-wow-park

One of the highlights for the kids was the intriguing merry-go-round type equipment.  It doesn’t spin as fast as the ones did when we were kids, but still super fun.  There is netting all around to keep kids from falling off as easy, too.  My kids loved climbing on it and then taking turns spinning everyone around.  Even my teenager had a blast!

All the equipment easily works for when a bunch of kids show up at once to play.  Everywhere we turned, there was something new and different to play with or on!

Another great feature is that there is walking path that parents can walk on that goes around the playground but is inside the fence!  You can get some exercise while your children play.  From what I am reading, it’s about 1/5 of a mile path, but I haven’t measured it for myself yet.  I definitely will be using this feature.  I saw one man walking/jogging the path and a few little kids riding their bikes or scooters on it as well.

We had a blast and will definitely be back!  This is a great place to visit!

Funopolis Review

We recently took the family to Funopolis Family Fun Center in Commerce, GA.  We have been here only once before and it was a huge hit with the kids.  We were eager to go back and review it for you guys.  Big thanks to U.S Family Guide for helping us to provide this Funopolis Family Fun Center Review.

For reference, we were give the 3 hour wrist bands, a $5 game card, a slice of pizza and a drink for each person in our family.

About the 3 Hour Wrist Bands:

Includes unlimited: Go Karts or Mini Go Karts, Mini Golf, Tornado Ride or Pirate Ship, Rock Wall, Bumper Cars, Spider Zone Hip Hop Ride, 2 Sessions of Laser Tag.
Seasonal Attractions: Bumper Boats, Water Wars (2 buckets), & Down Pour Derby (2 dunks)

Discounts are available when you buy as a family 4 pack, and more people can be added for an extra charge if you have additional family members.  Pricing is available on their website.

Our Thoughts:

I thought that 3 hours would be plenty of time, but we had so much fun we were wanting more time!  3 hours can go by super quick when you’re having that much fun!  When we go again, I plan on buying the all day unlimited pass.

There was something for everyone to do, from my 13 year old down to the baby, but keep in mind if you have several littles, you will want to take an extra adult or 2 so everyone can take turns riding the go-carts.

Screen Shot 2016-08-16 at 9.22.42 AM

My 7 year old daughter’s favorite part was surprisingly the rock wall.  She had never been on one before and managed to complete both the beginning and intermediate levels and climbed halfway up the hard level!

Funopolis Collage

We filled the rest of our time slot with laser tag, bumper boats, bumper cars, mini golf, go-karts, bowling, and more!  We definitely want to go back and do mini golf again when it isn’t so hot.  We only made it through the first couple holes before we remembered it was a 90 plus degree day in Georgia 🙂

Afterward, we enjoyed some fresh pizza from the cafe.  It actually was pretty good and wasn’t the typical cheap “cardboard pizza” that you find in many food courts.  We enjoyed it.

Lastly, we hit the game room.  There are tons of varieties of games and they all have a different price.  The game room is accessed using your play card to start the games.  The play card even holds all of your ticket values!

Interested in checking out Funopolis?  Head on over to their website to find out more and even locate coupons and specials.  Also as we get closer to fall, they will be offering their haunted house with Fearopolis.

Urban Enigmas - Athens Escape Room

Oh my goodness!  We just had the time of our lives checking out an escape room in Athens, Georgia.  Urban Enigmas is the newest Athens escape room that can be arranged for various experiences and difficulty levels.  My husband and I went with our older 4 children, ages almost 13, 9, 7, and 5.

About Urban Enigmas:

Urban Enigmas is a premier Athens escape room.  They currently offer 2 escape game rooms, with more in the works.

  • Innocence: You and your group of “accomplices” have been framed and arrested for crimes connected with a ten million dollar diamond heist.  Soon the guards will be back to transport the group to the courthouse where you’ll be brought up on charges.  You have 60 minutes to decide: Do you want to simply escape and live the rest of your life on the run as a fugitive? Or, do you want to prove your innocence by uncovering the person who committed the crime and free yourself from all charges?
  • Dorm Room Daze: Kickoff to the big game against conference rivals is in an hour, and your tickets are nowhere to be found. You quickly realize that during last night’s get together at the dorm, some of the attendees decided it would be fun to prank you and hide the tickets. You have 60 minutes to follow the clues that were left behind by the pranksters, find the tickets, and make it to the game. Or face missing the biggest game of the year.

Screen Shot 2016-07-19 at 9.05.50 PM

Our Thoughts:

We have been to an escape room once before, but I have to say that Urban Enigmas blew us out of the water with today’s experience!  We were so impressed with how well thought out all the puzzles are in the game!

When you arrive for your escape room experience, be sure to be 15 minutes early so you can get checked in and sign the waivers.  After checking in, you will watch a short video explaining how the game works and what to do and not to do while you’re in the room.

When you visit Urban Enigmas, I definitely recommend taking along the kids!  My children noticed things that my husband and I didn’t, helping us to solve the puzzles faster than we would have on our own.  Wonderful team building experience!

Throughout the game, the employees will be watching and providing hints and clues on the room monitors.  This was pretty neat!  The monitor would make a noise whenever a hint or clue was coming our way.  If you get really stumped, you have 3 free clues to help you solve the puzzles.

Our family explored the Dorm Room Daze room and escaped with only 24 seconds to spare!  I wish I could elaborate more on the fun we had and what both of their rooms have in common, but I don’t want to ruin it for when you go!  All I can say is that you will be very pleased during your experience!

Now that we know how to escape from Dorm Room Daze, it’s only a matter of time before we return and try out Innocence.  Definitely a top place to visit in my book!

For More Information:

For more information, please check out the Urban Enigmas website and book your escape room experience.  You can also visit them on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram. Urban Enigmas also offers birthday party packages and group rates for your own team building experience.
