Free Things To Do With Kids in Athens, GA

I just love Athens!  We’ve lived in the Athens area for about 10 years now and it’s awesome.  So diverse, so educational, and so many things to do!  If you’re looking for some free things to do with kids in Athens, Georgia here’s a roundup for you!

World of Wonder Playground: Climb, Walk, Jump, Slide, and enjoy this huge playground that Athens offers!

Georgia Museum of Art: Walk around the Georgia Museum of Art with your family for free!  They also offer Family Day with a gallery tour and a hands-on activity!

Athens Farmers Market: This one is fun to walk around and check out the local fruits, veggies, and more!  For times and details, check out their website.

Lyndon House Arts Center: This is a very historic house.  The interior has been restored and arranged with decorative art and furnishings of the period.  All exhibitions are free and open to the public during regular gallery hours – Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon to 9:00 p.m., and Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Lyndon House Arts Center is closed on Saturdays when there is a University of Georgia home football game.

Bear Hollow Zoo: This small zoo is fun and easy to walk through with the kids.  There are animal facts along your walk that you can read with the kids.  There are often activities and open classroom times that you can find on their website.  After the zoo, take a walk around Memorial Park next door, have a picnic, and play on the play sets.

Sandy Creek Nature Center: Consisting of over 225 acres and 4 miles of trails, you’ll have something to do all day long.  If you prefer to stay indoors, the Visitor Center includes live reptiles, amphibians, marine and freshwater aquariums, interactive natural history exhibits, and an incredible resource library, all housed in an eco-friendly building.  Often you can find special programs for free or sometimes an additional cost.

State Botanical Garden of Georgia:  This is another one that is mostly outdoors but with a nice indoor greenhouse as well.  Gorgeous plants and shrubs to look at and lots of great walking trails.  Perfect spot for family photographs!  They also have special programs available at an additional cost.

Athens Clarke-County Library: The library not only has books, but has plenty of computers for the kids to play on, dollhouses, puzzles, and more!  Ask at the children’s section desk for the puzzles or games.  Often they have puppet shows, story times, movie nights, and more.  Great way to get out of the house on a rainy day.

The Tree That Owns Itself: This one is actually just a quick driveby, but my kids find it fascinating.  The land on which the tree stands was originally owned by Col. William H. Jackson, a professor at the University of Georgia. Legend has it that in the early 1800s, Professor Jackson, out of love for the  great oak, deeded to the tree ownership of itself and the land within eight feet of it on all sides.  It is located at the Corner of Finley St. and Dearing St.

Bishop Park: This is one of our favorite parks to play at during the nice days.  The only downfall is the bathroom is a little bit of a hike from the playground.  There are tennis courts and swimming pools at this park as well.

Harris Shoals: This is located in Watkinsville, but I’m told it’s worth the short drive.  Bring a picnic lunch and play clothes so the kids can play in the water and on the shoals.  The entrance of the park is at Harris Shoals Drive, which is located on Highway 53 between Interstate 441 and VFW Drive.

Please let me know if you know of other great spots to add to this list!

Melissa Christian and David Gabriel are riding in the Police Unity Tour for the third year in a row, and they have pledged to raise $4,000 for the Tour. To help raise the $4,000 in pledges, the Foundation will sell whole Boston Butts and Full Racks of Ribs smoked by infamous BBQ artisan cook Todd Pulliam.

Tickets must be purchased in advance. Boston Butt tickets are $35 each. Each Boston Butt will feed 8-10 people. Rack of Rib tickets are $20 each. Each Rack of Ribs will feed 2-3 people.

Each ticket entitles the bearer to pick up one fully cooked Boston Butt or one full Rack of Ribs on March 8, 2014 at one of two different pickup times, 11am-2pm for lunch or 4pm-6pm for supper.

Pickup will be in front of the Athens-Clarke County Police Department at 3035 Lexington Road in Athens, Georgia.

About the Police Unity Tour
The Police Unity Tour is a fundraising event in which thousands of bicyclists made up of active law enforcement officers and survivors of fallen law enforcement officers ride for hundreds of miles to converge on Washington D.C. to kick off the start of National Police Week. The purpose of this ride is to raise awareness of law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty, and to raise funds for the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial and Museum.

The motto of the Police Unity Tour is “We Ride for Those Who Died.” Each Tour participant rides in honor of a particular fallen officer. Gabriel and Christian are riding to honor the memories of Elmer “Buddy” Christian and Ivorie Klusmann.

Buddy Christian was an Athens-Clarke County Police Officer that was killed in the line of duty on March 22nd, 2011. Buddy Christian was also the husband of Melissa Christian.

Ivorie Klusmann was killed in a single vehicle crash while responding to backup another officer on August 10, 2013. Officer Klusmann had served with the DeKalb County (GA) Police Department for only 10 months. Officer Klusmann is survived by his two children.

A few of you have asked about how to find deals on locally grown produce.  One of my favorite sites for finding local produce is a co-op called Locally Grown. Here’s how to find one in your area:

  • First go HERE and look at the map to find your closest Locally Grown Co-Op.  There are divisions all over the US. (CLICK HERE for the Athens, GA Locally Grown)
  • Once you find yours, then click on The Market.  You’ll find everything from meats, veggies, eggs, and fruits, to homemade pies, breads and more.
  • From here, you place your order and pick it up at the designated time and location in your city.  For the Athens area, you can pickup your orders from 4:30 until 8:00 p.m. on Thursdays at Ben’s Bikes, located at the corner of Pope & Broad Streets near downtown (670 W. Broad Street).

We’ve placed many orders through the Athens Locally Grown and have been very pleased with the goodies we receive.  If you have any questions, just read the FAQ section on their site.  It helps out a bunch!

Do you have any experience with Locally Grown or a similar co-op?  Leave a comment and tell us about it!

Brett’s Casual American Restaurant Review

My husband and I went out last night for dinner and some much needed quality time alone, without our 3 sidekicks.  On a whim, we decided to try Brett’s Casual American in Athens, a place we’d never been to but had heard was a good place to try.

At Brett’s, we were pleasantly surprised by the many MANY items offered on the menu.  Something to please everyone.  The first thing I always try at a new restaurant is the burger.  If a place knows how to cook a great burger (to my well-done specifations) then that is a place I will return.  I also ordered the onion rings with my burger.  My husband tried the Talapia.  When our dinner arrived, it looked fantastic.  Everything was cooked to perfection.  The burger was cooked exactly how I like it and had a wonderful flavor.  The onion rings were these little tiny slivers of onions and there was a HUGE mound of them!  They had such a unique flavor that I can hardly wait to go back and get more!  My husband loved his fish so much he was tempted to ask for seconds!

Brett’s would be a fantastic place to go on a date, or even with kids.  They have an outdoor section up front and a back area with small booths meant for just 2 guests.  That’s where my husband and I sat and had a wonderful time.

The prices were reasonable – a little more than what my frugal self likes to pay, but I definately think we’ll be back again.  My burger and side were $8 and my husband’s fish plate was $10.  We were told that on Monday and Tuesdays little kids meals cost just $2!  And on Mondays, they have a free ice cream sundae bar for the kids!  Brett’s also has a Rewards program where you can earn coupons and learn about special deals.

All in all, great place to eat, and we’re very glad we tried it.  This post was not influenced by Brett’s Casual American in any way – we just found a great place to eat and thought we’d share it!
