Did you know that April is National Card and Letter Writing Month? My kids and I love writing letters or sending a quick card to a friend to let them know we are thinking of them. Even though email and text messaging are available, there’s just something about having a nice card to stick up on the fridge or somewhere as a reminder that we are loved. I even have a sweet card on my fridge from a friend that simple says “You are Loved”. It’s one of my treasured keepsakes.

Mmmm… My favorite season is upon us…. Strawberry Pickin’ Season!  Words can’t describe a fresh picked strawberry!  I took my crew out picking strawberries today at Moon Farms.  We chose this farm because they have a lower price and because they don’t charge per person, and as a family of 7, we save where we can.

We had a blast picking at Moon Farms!  I’m not sure what we are going to do with all of the strawberries yet.  I’m sure we will make some strawberry jam in the bread machine, possibly a strawberry shortcake, and most definitely we’ll eat them like crazy!  If you live in my area, here are the local strawberry patches that I am aware of.  Let me know if you know any others not listed or if you have any feedback on these patches.

Moon Farms: Moon Farms is open Monday-Saturday from 9-6 and Sundays from 2-6.  One thing that I particularly love about Moon Farms is that they have fresh homemade strawberry ice cream available to buy!  You haven’t lived until you’ve tried their fresh strawberry ice cream! Pick your own berries in a gallon bucket for $13 or pre-picked for $16. Buckets are $1. **Cash and Check only**

Washington Farms: It’s always best to call or check their website before you head out to Washington Farms.  Sometimes they get slammed with visitors and will be picked out for the day.  Washington Farms is open from 8am-6pm Monday-Saturday as long as they have ripe berries.  They are closed Sunday.   Prices are $14 for a gallon of pick your own berries or $17 for pre-picked. Bucket price is $1.50. NEW THIS SPRING: There is a $1 per person (including children) Strawberry Field Admission fee to enter the fields to pick your own strawberries. You can also purchase a Season Pass for Spring 2021 Strawberry Picking for $4.95 per person and use all season long! 

Pharr Farms: I’ve only recently heard about this farm, thanks to a reader’s tip, and haven’t been out here yet. I’d love feedback from you guys if you go! Their U-pick strawberries are $15 a gallon and this includes a bucket. They will also have pre-picked berries for $17 a gallon and this also includes a bucket. Check their facebook page for picking times/availability. Located in Winder, GA.

The Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Department announces “Kinderswim” a free summer “learn to swim” program for five year olds who live in Athens-Clarke County.

In 2015, the American Red Cross estimated that 61% of children did not know how to swim. In an attempt to make summer safer and reduce the number of non-swimmers, the Leisure Services Department offers this inaugural program providing free swim lessons that has the potential to reach hundreds of children.

There are three sessions available and classes are held on June 1 – 18, June 22-July 9, or July 13 – July 30.  Time slots include 9:00 – 9:45 a.m., 11:30 a.m., – 12:15 p.m., or 5:30 – 6:15 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Space is limited to 20-30 participants per session and online registration is required.  These programs takes place at all five of the department’s pools including Bishop Park, East Athens Community Center, Lay Park, Memorial Park, and Rocksprings Park.  The “Kinderswim” program is free of charge to all participants.  Those children completing the “Kinderswim” program will receive an ACC Leisure Services Department Pool Pass that provides free admission to all department pools and splash pads for the 2020 aquatics season.
