Beric The Briton Heirloom Audio Productions Review
Back in March, we reviewed The Dragon and the Raven for you guys.  When we were asked to review another great product from Heirloom Audio Productions called Beric the Briton, we jumped at the chance.  When I say jumped, I mean really jumped.  My son jumped up and down over and over in excitement.  I’m definitely checking into other titles in the G.A. Henty adventures for his christmas gift.

My kids love listening to audio productions and this one did not disappoint.  We took a few days and listened to Beric the Briton in the evenings before bed.  Every night the kids groaned when I paused the CD so we could continue the next night.  They were so intrigued that I believe they would have sat right there on the couch the entire duration if given the chance.

About the Product:

Beric the Briton is a 2 CD set with over 2 hours of audio drama.  This time, in G.A. Henty’s adventures, we can join Beric and Bodouc as they are trained as gladiators and placed into the service of Nero during the Roman invasion!  Through the audio adventures, you will hear as Beric and Bodouc are forced to face their Pagan past and overcome many obstacles.  The Heirloom Audio Production mission includes bringing Christian history to life.

With the CD set, you’ll also gain exclusive access to lots of bonus products!

Brice the Briton Bonuses

The bonus products include:

  • Beric the Briton MP3 Downloads – MP3 of the Beric the Briton Adventure
  • Beric the Briton eBook – Henty’s original with new colorful graphics
  • Original MP3 Soundtrack – original score by Emmy-winning composer
  • Printable Cast Poster – Promotion poster featuring the star-studded cast
  • Study Guide and Discussion – Discussion Points, History Guide, and Bible study
  • Inspirational Verse Poster – Beautiful, printable copy of the inspirational verse
  • Live the Adventure Letter – Unlimited access to The Live Adventure webs
  • Behind the Scenes Video – Video documentary with the cast and crew in studio

The study guide includes ways to help your child remember what they have heard, think about the lessons learned, and even grow their vocabulary.

Screen Shot 2016-07-21 at 7.04.26 PM

The questions and activities are broken up in sections and clearly labeled with the areas to stop and discuss from the CDs, as you can see from above.  All help point the children into understanding some wonderful lifelong concepts of courage and bravery.

My Thoughts:

As with The Dragon and the Raven, we just loved listening to the adventures in Beric the Briton.  The sound effects are so wonderful that you feel like you’re actually there in the story as well with the gladiators and soldiers!  It was very well done.

As a mom, I appreciate knowing that I do not have to worry that the kids will hear something inappropriate.  This audio drama is geared toward children.

There is so much that I want to tell you about the story, but I don’t want to ruin it for you.  All I can say is that it keeps you on the edge of your seat and thirsty for more.  No complaints from me!

Review & Giveaway: Urban Enigmas – Athens Escape Room

Urban Enigmas - Athens Escape Room

Oh my goodness!  We just had the time of our lives checking out an escape room in Athens, Georgia.  Urban Enigmas is the newest Athens escape room that can be arranged for various experiences and difficulty levels.  My husband and I went with our older 4 children, ages almost 13, 9, 7, and 5.

About Urban Enigmas:

Urban Enigmas is a premier Athens escape room.  They currently offer 2 escape game rooms, with more in the works.

  • Innocence: You and your group of “accomplices” have been framed and arrested for crimes connected with a ten million dollar diamond heist.  Soon the guards will be back to transport the group to the courthouse where you’ll be brought up on charges.  You have 60 minutes to decide: Do you want to simply escape and live the rest of your life on the run as a fugitive? Or, do you want to prove your innocence by uncovering the person who committed the crime and free yourself from all charges?
  • Dorm Room Daze: Kickoff to the big game against conference rivals is in an hour, and your tickets are nowhere to be found. You quickly realize that during last night’s get together at the dorm, some of the attendees decided it would be fun to prank you and hide the tickets. You have 60 minutes to follow the clues that were left behind by the pranksters, find the tickets, and make it to the game. Or face missing the biggest game of the year.

Screen Shot 2016-07-19 at 9.05.50 PM

Our Thoughts:

We have been to an escape room once before, but I have to say that Urban Enigmas blew us out of the water with today’s experience!  We were so impressed with how well thought out all the puzzles are in the game!

When you arrive for your escape room experience, be sure to be 15 minutes early so you can get checked in and sign the waivers.  After checking in, you will watch a short video explaining how the game works and what to do and not to do while you’re in the room.

When you visit Urban Enigmas, I definitely recommend taking along the kids!  My children noticed things that my husband and I didn’t, helping us to solve the puzzles faster than we would have on our own.  Wonderful team building experience!

Throughout the game, the employees will be watching and providing hints and clues on the room monitors.  This was pretty neat!  The monitor would make a noise whenever a hint or clue was coming our way.  If you get really stumped, you have 3 free clues to help you solve the puzzles.

Our family explored the Dorm Room Daze room and escaped with only 24 seconds to spare!  I wish I could elaborate more on the fun we had and what both of their rooms have in common, but I don’t want to ruin it for when you go!  All I can say is that you will be very pleased during your experience!

Now that we know how to escape from Dorm Room Daze, it’s only a matter of time before we return and try out Innocence.  Definitely a top place to visit in my book!

For More Information:

For more information, please check out the Urban Enigmas website and book your escape room experience.  You can also visit them on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram. Urban Enigmas also offers birthday party packages and group rates for your own team building experience.

Being an election year, I want my kids to have a better understanding of our government.  As you may have noticed on our Homeschool 2016-20-17 plans, we intend on using Uncle Sam and You curriculum for social studies with our older children.

Our friends at Timberdoodle have sent us this Notgrass curriculum set and we looked forward to writing this  Uncle Sam and You review.

About This Product:

This Notgrass Company kit includes:

  • Uncle Sam and You Part 1, 75 lessons.
  • Uncle Sam and You Part 2, 75 lessons.
  • The Citizen’s Handbook
  • Uncle Sam and You Answer Key

Between all of the books, you have a full year of learning about civics and government.  This program is geared for children in 5th-8th grade, but can be used with guidance for younger students.  Lessons focus on America’s founding documents, branches of government, patriotic symbols, voting, the election process, Washington, D.C., the presidency, how Congress works, American holidays, and aspects of federal, state, and local government.

Each text includes 15 units, and 4 lessons per unit.  Perfect for 4 day a week learning.  Each full-color lesson includes a short chapter to read that explains the topic to the student; chapters feature both modern and historical photographs and illustrations. Lessons conclude with a variety of subject-based activity ideas that relate to Biblical studies, literature, creative writing, art, vocabulary, reading assignments, and notes for the sold-separately (and optional) student workbook/lesson review. A weekly family activity that involves crafts, meals, and other multi-age activities is also provided.

My Thoughts:

At first, I was overwhelmed and didn’t quite know where to start!  Where was the teacher’s manual to show me what to do?  I opened Uncle Sam and You Part 1 and the instructions are right there for teachers and/or students.  I really appreciate not having to keep up with an extra manual and having the simple instructions right with the text.  This way, children can work independently, or you could work together as a family.  We are choosing to work through it together.

I like that it suggests additional reading materials and lets you know exactly when you will need them throughout the lessons if you so choose to add them in.  It’s enough material without being too overwhelming and can usually be completed within about 30-45 minutes.

This is our first experience with a Notgrass curriculum and we are very pleased.  We will be checking out more of their items through Timberdoodle in years to come.

For More Information:

The Notgrass Uncle Sam and You curriculum set is another outstanding component of Timberdoodle’s 2016 Sixth-Grade Curriculum Kit!  You can also get the optional Lesson Review or Student Workbook .

The Heroines Club: A Mother-Daughter Empowerment Circle

A few weeks ago, a local Athens, Georgia author asked me about checking out her work.  Melia Keeton-Digby has written a book called The Heroines Club: A Mother-Daughter Empowerment Circle.

I’m all about supporting local businesses, so I agreed to check it out.

About the Author:

Melia Keeton-Digby is a Speech Language Pathologist, mother of 3 and is the found of the Mother-Daughter Nest.  Through the Mother-Daughter Nest, Melia works to encourage and empower women to build meaningful relationship with their daughters.

About the Book:

The Heroines Club: A Mother-Daughter Empowerment Circle offers nourishing guidance and a creative approach for mothers and daughters, aged 7+, to learn and grow together through the study of women’s history. Each month focuses on a different heroine, featuring athletes, inventors, artists, and revolutionaries from around the world – including Frida Kahlo, Rosalind Franklin, Amelia Earhart, Anne Frank, Maya Angelou and Malala Yousafzai as strong role models for young girls to learn about, look up to, and be inspired by.

Offering thought-provoking discussion, powerful rituals, and engaging creative activities, The Heroines Club fortifies our daughters’ self-esteem, invigorates mothers’ spirits, and nourishes the mother-daughter relationship. In a culture that can make mothering daughters seem intimidating and isolating, it offers an antidote: a revolutionary model for empowering your daughter and strengthening your mother-daughter relationship.

My Thoughts:

The Heroines Club: A Mother-Daughter Empowerment Circle has been an interesting read for me.  Having 3 daughters, I feel that building relationships with my girls is extremely important, especially through the preteen and teen years and on into adulthood.  My oldest daughter is turning 13 (13!!!!)  in just a couple weeks, and I have been realizing how much more communicating we need to be doing now before the rough years hit.  I think learning from other women, especially our own mothers, has been becoming less and less.  There is so much that I could have learned from my grandmothers that I never did!

For me, I think there is a lot I can glean from The Heroines Club book, but there is a few things that I would likely skip.  I’m not quite sure I agree with the sacred circle and a few other things that are discussed in the beginning of the book due to my personal beliefs, however the curriculum included in the main part of the book is very intriguing.

I really liked the idea of taking Heroines like Amelia Earhart and discussing them with my daughters.  The book helps to facilitate discussions about these wonderful heroines, what they did, how we can learn from them, and how we can achieve our dreams as well.

Activities are also included from making Dream Boards to share your dreams with each other to discussing stereotypes.  All important things to do.

In a nutshell, this is a great book to help strengthen the bond with your daughter(s), but depending on your personal beliefs, there may be sections that you would want to skip.

For more information:

For more information, you can find The Heroines Club: A Mother-Daughter Empowerment Circle on Amazon.  You can also check out The Mother-Daughter Nest, The Heroines Club website, or The Mother-Daughter Nest on Instagram.

Thank you Melia for offering us your book to read.

Thinkfun Circuit Maze

We love hands on learning here in our homeschool adventures.  We were thrilled when Timberdoodle asked us to review another fun product by Thinkfun.  This time, we checked out the Circuit Maze.

Circuit Maze 3

Circuit Maze Review:

Circuit Maze is an electronic current logic game that helps introduce electricity and currants to ages 8 and up.  The game offers 60 challenges from beginning to expert.

You use the challenge cards to lay out the pieces and try and put together an electric currant.  Once the circuit is completed, the beacons will all light up and you win!

You will need 3 AAA batteries in order to play.

Circuit Maze 2

Our Thoughts:

My kids just loved the challenges of the Circuit Maze.  I have found them spending a lot of time working on the challenges.  With each challenge, I know it requires them to think about how to make the circuit work.  You can practically see the wheels turning in their heads as they work on each challenge.

I like that it is quiet and something that can be played by themselves, so it is perfect for our daily afternoon quiet time.  I have even enjoyed playing with it!

Big win in the logic department!  We are fans!

For More Information:

For more information, you can find Thinkfun’s Circuit Maze on Timberdoodle’s website and as part of Timberdoodle’s 3rd grade curriculum kit.

Big thanks to Timberdoodle for giving us the chance to do this Circuit Maze review.

Review: Timberdoodle – Paint-by-Number Museum Series

Paint by Number Museum Series

My kids all love to paint, but let’s face it.  There are not many Paint-by-Number sets for the over 8 crowd.  Fortunately, we have found one that we really love!

Timberdoodle recently sent my big kids the Faber Castell Paint-by-Number Museum Series set to check out.  At first glance, I didn’t see how this would really work out.  The paintings looked pretty intricate.
Painting

About the Product:

This set includes four painting kits, each with a 6″ x 8″ canvas, pop up easel, brush, 6 acrylic paint colors and instructions. In this set, children can make an interpretation of  The Eiffel Tower by Georges Seurat, The Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh, The Japanese Footbridge by Claude Monet, and the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci.

My Thoughts:

The canvases come with an instruction sheet with some guidelines to help make your masterpiece.  My children found these very easy to follow and the final results really DID look like it was supposed to look!  They took a bit of patience to paint in the small areas and so they were occupied for quite a while during art time.  The techniques it taught will be useful in art for the future.  Now we have their beautiful art standing in the easel that came with it.  We have the lovely Eiffel Tower piece on a bookshelf in our room.

Definitely a win in my book!

Old and New Testament Online Self-Paced Bible Veritas Review
During this summer, we’ve been slowing our school down a bit and are learning more about the Bible.  Our friends at Veritas Press provided us with a One Year Family Subscription to VeritasBible.com to check out their exciting Bible program.

Old and New Testament Online Self-Paced Bible Veritas Review

About VeritasBible.com:

VeritasBible.com is a new online Bible program that helps kids to learn more about the Bible without really even realizing that they are learning.

Currently, there are three different courses included in VeritasBible.com.  Those courses are:

  • Genesis to Joshua
  • Judges to Kings
  • The Gospels

2 more courses are being added soon, although the website doesn’t mention when that will be yet.  Those are:

  • Chronicles to Malachi and Job
  • Acts to Revelation

Each course covers 32 main events in that section of the Bible and features music to help memorize the chronology of events.  Memory tools for names, dates, and places are also utilized during the course.  Through the VeritasBible.com program, your children will explore the Bible through activities in art, music, and geography.  Each course also includes projects, worksheets, and tests.

Our Thoughts:

I have been using VeritasBible with my older 3 kids, ages 12, 9, and soon to be 7.  So far, my kids are loving VeritasBible.com.  They to play their “Bible game” daily!

I have started each of my three older children on a different course since they often like to watch over a sibling’s shoulder during computer times.  My almost 7 year old has started on Genesis to Joshua, my 9 year old on Judges to Kings, and my oldest on The Gospels.

Screen Shot 2016-06-27 at 2.31.29 PM

We found that my almost 7 year old enjoys using VeritasBible.com but that it is a little advanced for her, personally.  She is a little behind on reading and some of the big words on the quizzes and such were more than she could do right now.  She did very well with it if I sat with her and helped with the bigger words.  She really enjoys the program though and I can tell that she is still learning, even if she does need a little assistance.

Screen Shot 2016-06-27 at 2.53.38 PM

My son has learned more in the past few weeks from the Judges to Kings program than I even knew about that section of the Bible!  He has been memorizing the judges of Israel in order and much more!  I think I may even need to go through this program!

My oldest thinks that the songs are somewhat catchy, but she did get a little tired of hearing them in each lesson.   My son likes watching the map change as the characters venture through the Bible stories and playing the games.

Some of the quizzes were a little hard for them, though.  There were a lot of little details that it would ask the kids to recollect, and oftentimes we would have to redo a lesson and work together to come up with the answers.  It appears that the program greatly focusses on memorization, which it wonderful when learning about Biblical material.

I think we will continue using VeritasBible.com throughout this year and maybe more in the future since I have seen how much they have grown in their understanding and knowledge of the Bible.  I look forward to my kids completing their current programs and moving on to see the new ones yet to be released.

Review: YWAM Publishing – CHRISTIAN HEROES: THEN & NOW Corrie ten Boom

Christian Heroes {YWAM Publishing Review}

I was super eager to read and review YWAM Publishing‘s CHRISTIAN HEROES: THEN & NOW Corrie ten Boom: Keeper of the Angels’ Den for The Old Schoolhouse Review Crew.  While on a church women’s retreat in February, I was talking with a friend about Corrie Ten Boom.  She shared about the impact that Corrie Ten Boom had on her life and the amazing story of courage behind her.  When this opportunity came about to review this book, I jumped at the chance to find out more.

The past few weeks, the big kids (age 9 and 12) and I have been reading through the CHRISTIAN HEROES: THEN & NOW Corrie ten Boom: Keeper of the Angels’ Den book and working through the digital unit study so we can learn more about this Christian Hero.

Christian Heroes {YWAM Publishing Review}
CHRISTIAN HEROES: THEN & NOW Corrie ten Boom: Keeper of the Angels’ Den is 208 pages long and is geared toward children ages 10 and up.  If you’re not familiar with her story, Corrie ten Boom and her family lived in Holland.  They risked their lives to save many jewish people during the holocaust.  Reading about the persecution helped us to understand more of what it must have been like during that horrible time.

So far, we’ve made it about halfway through the book and it has my kids begging to read more every night.  It’s taking us a little longer to read the book since we are doing the unit study as well and trying to do all the activities.  I’m also trying to read it to them when the littles are in bed.  As a parent/teacher, I really appreciate unit studies to help us get a little more in depth while we are reading history books.  I’ve been amazed at the things that I’ve been learning right along with the kids.

Corrie Ten Boom Unit Study

I printed the digital unit study, which is 75 pages long, three hole punched it and put it into a folder for easy use.  The digital unit study is helpful to reinforce learning through history, geography, essay writing, creative writing, reading comprehension, public speaking, drama, and art.  There are six questions in the unit study for each of the chapters of Corrie ten Boom and other ways to make the material come to life.  I found that the questions really provoked wonderful conversations between the children and I as we discussed what we would do if we were in a conflict where our faith was being tested.  I sure hope I have the courage of Corrie ten Boom in that situation!

YWAM Publishing has many other great Christian Heroes books available such as Amy Carmichael, C.S. Lewis, Lottie Moon, William Carey, and more.  Be sure to check out their website for the complete list.

CHRISTIAN HEROES: THEN & NOW Corrie ten Boom currently sells for $7.50 and also is available in Spanish and is also available as an audiobook, Kindle or Nook download.  I know we will definitely be checking out more of these books once we finish this study.  I think we will do C.S. Lewis next!

You can find out more on their Facebook page, Twitter, Pinterest, or on the YWAM Publishing blog.
